31 / DEC / 05 - 1720 CST : "Christmas Day of the Dead - Pt. XII"

We gots us a strip folks.  Yep, the end to this storyline is so damn close I can actually taste it (and in case you're wondering,  it tastes like sexiness...and cinnamon).

Well I probably won't have chance to say it any closer to midnight so allow me to do so now...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I'll do a little out with the old / in with the new kinda write up thing tomorrow.  Till then, have fun tonight (but please, stay safe folks)!

Later,

-Ed

1227 CST : It's on the way...

For those of you who were wondering, there will be a strip posted today.

Now back to working on it!

29 / DEC / 05 - 0756 CST : Lazy with a purpose...

Hey folks.  I wanted to say a few things when I posted yesterday, but I was running pretty late so I never got the chance.

Blah, Blah, Blah...

Having almost a third of a strip consist of one giant word bubble is far from being an ideal way of presenting a story to the viewer.  Even someone as wordy as myself can admit to that.  Essentially that little speech by Grey was a compromise I needed to make in order to "get on with it" and try to wrap up this tale before Ukrainian Christmas gets here!

Anyway, I just wanted to let you folks know that what I did there was not an indication of what direction I plan to take the strip in the future in regards to it's visual presentation.  Rest assured you will never see the day where I cut out drawing completely and have each strip consists entirely of word bubbles.

I'll just save that technique for special occasions like when I'm running over with a storyline, or painfully hung over.

Give till it bleeds...

I meant to mention this a week or so ago, but Peter Tarkulich has put the full version of his short film "The Heart of Christmas" up on the net for your viewing pleasure.  I got a huge kick out of it, and I think all you zombie / Christmas lovers out there will too (which means my mother will most likely want to skip this one).

Oh, and there are a couple of naughty words in it too, so be warned.

When you do see it though be sure to watch it all the way through till the end of the credits or you'll miss out.  Also if you like what you see, you may want to drop Peter a quick e-mail to let him know.  Trust me when I say that even a little bit of feedback can go a long way to giving a boost to people who take the time to create bits of entertainment like this.

My delayed vacation...

Just a reminder that once "Christmas Day of the Dead" wraps up (should be in three strips I think) I'll be taking a week off from the strip.  I had intended to do so this last week, but I really wanted to put the dead to bed before I did.

I'll post more on this just before I take the break, but I figured I'd mention it now for those of you that missed my previous post about it.

Well I guess that's all for now.  I'm off to work on the next strip.

Later,

The new strip is finally up.  I've gotta run, but I'll be back to post more later.

27 / DEC / 05 - 2355 CST : Catching up...

Sorry folks.  I ended up going out with a friend I hadn't had a chance to hang out with in months and I totally lost track of time.  I'll try to get the strip up before I head to bed.  Otherwise it should be up early tomorrow.

-Ed

1520 CST : Hang in there folks...

Just wanted to drop by to say that I hope y'all had a very safe and Merry Christmas.  And also to let you folks know that you can expect the next strip to be up sometime today.

As well, I've made the draw for the voting incentive, and will be contacting the winner soon (most likely within the next 24 hours).  I'm also going to be giving away a consolation prize to the two voters out there who managed to put in an entry for every single phrase that I put up from the time the contest started.  Once I've contacted and heard back from all three people, I'll post here and announce who these lucky devils were.

Okay, back to work.

25 / DEC / 05 - 0700 CST : MERRY CHRISTMAS!

You may have seen me mention a few times how my mother has been rather unimpressed with the way I chose to express the holiday spirit with my current storyline.  Due to that fact I've decided to do something a bit different today.

Enjoy folks, and Merry Christmas!

24 / DEC / 05 - 1500 CST: And God said, "Let there be Turkey..."

Hey folks.

I imagine if you're anything like me than you're getting ready to kick off all the Holiday craziness that tends to take place over the next few days.  In fact, I'm guessing that more than a few of you are already knee deep in it.

Well I'll be sure to let you get right back to it, but before I do let me just wish each and everyone of you a happy and joyous holiday season.  Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah (and if I screwed up the spelling there I'm sorry, but you gotta admit for me and this site that's pretty much par for the course), some other special tradition, or even if this is just another day for you, I hope that you are surrounded by friends, family, and those that you love and care for.

And to quote one of my favorite Holiday Movies "That was absurd, now let's eat dead bird."

Take care, and stay safe everyone!

-Ed

PS:  And I promise that this current story will wrap up before the New Year!

PPS:  Okay, March at the latest.

22 / DEC / 05 - 1500 CST : Almost forgot...

I was going to post the work in progress wasn't I?  Well here is the strip inked and with all the text.  I'm hoping to at least get the flat colours and backgrounds done before bed, but at this point we'll see...

1100 CST : Let's try putting the cart before the horse for once...

Hey folks.

You know, every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday I always plan to write a nice little blurb here after I've posted the strip for that particular day.  However, what usually ends up happening is that by the time I finally finish off the strip I'm so freakin' tired that I can barely see straight, never mind actually write something coherent.  Hell, I have a hard enough time doing that when I'm well rested.

So today I figured I'd try something a little different and do a brief write up before I've finished the strip.  Let's see how it goes...

The current storyline summed up in two words...

NEVER AGAIN!

I'm not going to mince words here, I really like this story. In fact, I think it's the best thing I've done to date (but seeing as how I haven't even been at this for a year yet, that's not really saying much, is it?).  Granted I liked it a whole lot more before I had to edit it down to what it is now, but still, I'm a big fan of it.  I enjoyed writing it, I love drawing it, get a huge kick out of receiving feedback from some of you about it, and there are even times that I don't totally hate colouring it.

That being said, I will most likely never produce another tale of this length on the web again (or at the very least not for a very long time).  And if for some reason I do end up creating something that requires me to break out the big old "X" in order to keep track of what chapter I'm at, then I will only do so in one of two ways;

a) I'll produce it as a separate comic unto itself, and print it up to be sold at cons or whatever.

-or-

b) I'll make damn sure that I've finished most, if not all of it, long before I ever plan to post it on the site.

It's simply too big for someone as inexperienced as myself to deal with in a timely fashion.  To suddenly go from three, three panel strips a week, to what I've tried to do here and think that it won't be that big of deal was...well, total lunacy on my part.

As it stands now, I've just about given up all hope of getting this done by Christmas.  So forgive me if I do end up going a bit over (and I know from the feedback I've gotten so far many of you have already done so).

Oh, and even though I do still plan to take a week off from the strip, I promise I won't do so until after I've finished off Christmas Day of the Dead.  You have my word on it.

But getting back to today's strip...

Today's installment will mark the return of a certain diminutive, green clad Christmas warrior that you haven't seen for a few weeks.  This, in my mind at least, should mark the moment where a lot more "Christmas spirit" will start to be infused into the story.  Something I know my mother would be very happy to see, 'cause for the most part she hasn't exactly been thrilled with the direction I've taken thus far (don't worry mom, there is only one, or at the most two more decapitations left).

Anyway, the second after I post this I'm going to be hard at work on finishing it off,  however I've got a small Christmas gathering to attend later on tonight, so I may have to head to bed early.  So what I plan to do is post work in progress versions of the strip as time goes on.  That way, regardless of when I run out of steam, at least you folks won't be left without a new strip in some form or another.

And speaking of working on the strip, I guess I better get back to it now.

Later,

-Ed

PS: Stef, I'll give you a shout soon.  Hopefully by tomorrow at the latest!

20 / DEC / 05 - 1700 CST : "Christmas Day of the Dead - Pt. IX"

For the love of God, are we at part nine of this freakin' story now?!  Oh man.  I am soooo going to enjoy getting back to the nice little three parters that I used to do.  It seems like so long ago...

Anyway, the next chapter is up.  I didn't quite get all the shading done on this strip yet though.  I was planning on pushing on through till it was done, but I'm starting to make stupid mistakes and so I figured it's best to leave it alone for now (I'll try to have it finished up by tomorrow).

Also, I hope you brought your reading glasses with you, 'cause there is on whole hellova lotta text in this one (surprise, surprise!).

To be completely honest with you I could've, and perhaps should've, skipped this strip entirely as it's not exactly essential to the overall plot.  However I kinda liked the idea behind it and so I allowed myself this one last indulgence.  Of course I may kick myself for this later on if this strip ends up putting me one update past my self imposed deadline for when I want this story to wrap up, but for now I'm content with my choice in this matter.

Well that's it for me.  Talk to y'all on Thursday at the latest.

Later,

18 / DEC / 05 - 1545 CST : "Christmas Day of the Dead - Pt. VIII"

Long overdue, but here is part eight of the CDotD saga.

And here's hoping that with this strip things will be back on track as far as updates go.

0820 CST : Incoming!

Hey folks, just wanted to give y'all a heads up that I'll be posting the next page today.  That'll still leave me one strip behind, but I'm hoping that I'll be all 'caught up by Christmas.

See ya when the strip is up!

17 / DEC / 05 -  0351 CST : Voting up...

I kinda wish I could get the minute that I spent on that last blog update back.

-Ed

0345 CST : Voting down...

If you're wondering why the vote button is gone, it's because Webcomics List's site seems to be down at the moment.  Not sure when it'll be back, but when it is I'm sure that the button will reappear.

-Ed

0215 CST : Oops! It looks like I have some e-mailing to do...

Just a quick note to the folks who have sent in entries for the Geek Tragedy voting draw.  Those of you that have asked questions, or even just said a quick hello in your e-mails, I'm sorry I never got back to you.  I actually didn't realize people were writing much more than the code phrases, and so unfortunately I wasn't really taking a good look at many of the e-mails sent to that address.

Just figured I'd mention this in case you guys felt like I was ignoring you.  I'll try to play catch up with y'all over the next few days.

15 / DEC / 05 - 1325 CST : 'Tis the season, if you need a reason...

I'm not going to lie to you folks, the strip ain't gonna be done today.  Full pages, plus commission work, plus boring "work" work, plus Christmas season craziness, plus life in general is making it really tough for me to get the strips done on time lately.

Now I could rush it, or do more black and white strips but I really want this storyline to be done up right.  And that means full colour, and full pages.  Plus I've already whittled down as much as the story as I could and I don't fancy taking out any more.  As well, I've got a lot of positive feedback from folks about this little Christmas yarn that I'm spinning here, and from what I've heard people are really getting into it, and I'm not wanting to disappoint them by half assing it from here on out.

So here's the deal; From now until Christmas, I'm going to be putting out pages as fast as I possibly can, but not necessarily on Tues, Thurs, and Sundays.  Days that I don't post the pages, I'll be posting some finished panels here on the blog to help tie you guys over till the full strip is up.

It's my hope that this weekend and the coming Christmas weekend will afford me enough time to pick up all the slack from the previous weekdays.  So what this might mean (with emphasis on the word might) is that I'll be able to update twice on the weekends.  And if that's the case, then everything will equal out in the end in regards to strip updates.

So there you have it.  I hope y'all are able to find it in your hearts to forgive me for how lax the strip schedule will be for the next couple weeks.  I'd like to think you will, as I'm sure almost all of you are also feeling the pressures that come with the last ten shopping days until Christmas.

While your waiting for the strip though, please take a peek at the following finished panel from what was supposed to be today's strip.  With any luck after seeing it you'll feel that the rest of this story might be worth waiting an extra day or two for...

14 / DEC / 05 - 1400 CST : "Christmas Day of the Dead - Pt. VII"

First off, sorry for the delay in getting the finished strip up.  I'd like to say that it won't happen again, but given how things have been going with these full page strips, for all I know the same thing could happen again tomorrow.

Some things to note about the strip.  Though it's being presented to you on a single page, this is basically three separate strips that have been edited down and spliced together.  As such I personally don't feel it has the best flow to it, but I did what I could.

As well, after staring at the unfinished strip for the better part of a night without any text to distract me, I noticed a few minor details that needed changing.  Blue Bird no longer looks like her lips have been pumped full of Botox.  One pic of Casey had some of it's neck removed, and another has been altered so that he no longer looks like he has the head of a two year old.

Also it should be noted that Frank calling Casey "Case" isn't a typo.  He's just using a more familiar form of his name.  So Leone, you can cross that off the list of mistakes that I'm sure you'll be sending me by the end of the night.

I'd also like to take this time to thank everyone who has been voting for the site so far this month.  You've being doing a wonderful job and I hope you find it in your hearts to continue it in the days ahead.

Oh yeah, and I'll be sure to have that "Thank You" wallpaper done up in the next couple of weeks!

Well I'm cooked folks so it's off to bed!

13 / DEC / 05 - 1830 CST : So close...

And yet so far.

Okay here's the deal.  I spent waaay too much time messing around with Blue Bird's new "hologramish" look, and not enough time on the rest of the strip, so it's still not quite done.

Unfortunately I also need to try and get at least some sleep today, which means it won't be finished till tomorrow.  In the mean time though, I posted where I'm at with the strip right now so that you folks can take a peek at it if you'd like.

Sorry everyone!  I promise I'll start getting the rest of it finished up the second I get home from work tomorrow morning.

1530 CST - The strip is coming...

12 / DEC / 05 - 1430 CST - The Best laid plans of mice and Ed...

For those of you who post or lurk around the forum, you might have seen me make a passing comment a few days back about a "directors cut extended version" of the Christmas storyline.  Well it's looking more and more like that may actually happen.

I don't exactly know how I ever thought that I'd be able to fit everything I wrote in before Christmas, 'cause I now realize that the only way I ever had a chance at accomplishing that feat was if I had started producing these strips in September.  At this point I can only blame my lack of experience in matters of sequential storytelling, and will in turn try my best to learn from my mistakes and do better in the future.

With only five more updates left before Christmas, I've really had to try and get pretty brutal with editing this storyline down (as it stands, I may actually have to see if I can squeeze in an extra strip somewhere between now and the 24th).  In the process I've had to take out a couple jokes/events that had been among my favorites right from when I first started writing this tale.  I've tried my best to think of some way of using these bits later on in the year, but for the most part they're so dependant on this specific storyline that I don't see how I'd be able to manage that.

Which leaves me with one alternative.  After Christmas I'm just going to have to keep working on "Christmas Day of the Dead" as a sort of side project while I continue with the rest of the strips.  Yeah, it may seem kinda odd for me to keep working on a Christmas story well past that holly jolly season, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

Now does this mean I'm going to be posting Christmas / zombie related strips throughout the year?  No.  In fact you most likely won't be seeing these strips for quite a while to come.  What it does mean is that eventually at some point in time (I'm guess Christmas of next year) you'll be seeing a remake of this storyline done up the way it was originally intended to be seen.

Well, I think that's just about enough jaw flappin' for me.  I guess I should be getting back to work now.  After all, I've got me a new(ish) ending to write.

Later,

-Ed

1120 CST : Vote for me, and I'll make all your dreams come true...

Well okay, that's highly unlikely, but it couldn't really hurt either, could it?

Just wanted to direct your attention to the "Vote For" banner up above which I've finally had a chance to get up (thanks again to JediAutobot for the suggestion).  Now while the banner itself doesn't help you cast you're vote for Geek Tragedy, it does explain the voting incentive draw to those of who who missed the blog entry on it.

Well that's it for now.  I may post more a bit later on, but if not I'll chat with you folks again tomorrow when I post the strip.

11 / DEC / 05 - 1600 CST : "Christmas Day of the Dead - Pt. VI"

Seeing as how the last strip I did was (mostly) black and white, I decided to take some extra care with colouring today's strip.  Hopefully it shows.

That's all for now folks.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Later,

-Ed

PS:  Oh yeah, and please remember to vote!

0330 CST : And so it shall be passed down for generations...

Been working on the strip and no matter how hard I'd try to put it out of my mind I just couldn't shake this craving for eggnog.  Now I could very easily have gone to the 7/11 down the street and paid the $10 or whatever the hell a place like that would overcharge for something like that, but I decided on a slightly different route.

I made my own!

Now I spent a few minutes surfing the net to find a recipe that I had all the ingredients for only to come up short by at least one ingredient per recipe.  So in the end, I took the combined wisdom of a bunch of those recipes, and decided to just wing it.

And surprisingly enough, I did in fact come up with something that tastes fairly eggnogish.  I call it "Ednog".

Sorry, just had to share that with y'all.  Hopefully this culinary achievement won't be marred ten or so minutes from now with another entry telling how horribly ill I've become.

08 / DEC / 05 - 1630 CST : "Christmas Day of the Dead - Pt. V"

Okay, so today's strip did end up being black and white(ish).  I do still want to colour it fully later on though, but for now just pretend Geek Tragedy is an old black and white horror movie.

Later,

0935 CST : A possible glimpse into the future...

Hey folks.

Yes, it's still well before the new strip is going to be posted, but I wanted to give you a bit of a heads up.  Today's strip may be in black and white.  It's not written in stone yet, but just in case I thought I'd warn you.

Yeah, I prefer the strips to be colour too, but it's a time thing right now as something has come up that may take a bit of my time away from the strip today.  If the strip is in B&W, I will do my best to have it coloured by Sunday.  However, if it ends up being coloured today after all...well I guess I just wasted our time writing this post, didn't I?

Oh, but before I get back to it I wanted to answer a question about the December voting draw.  For those of you who asked, yes, you can submit an entry to me every time the "code phrase" changes.  However, once the phrase has been changed you can't submit an entry for any of the old phrases that were used previously.

Alright, back to work!

07 / DEC / 05 - 1200 CST : Just as soon as I wake up...

It was suggested to me by JediAutobot on the forum that I should put up a little banner to help remind folks of this month's voting incentive, and I will in fact be doing that very soon.  But first I have the chance to catch up on some sleep, and you know me and sleep...

In the mean time just scroll down and bit and see what I'm talking about.

Also, I didn't get most of the shading done on today's strip.  If I have time tomorrow, I'll be sure to do it then.  If not, well hopefully I'll get it done before the New Year.

05 / DEC / 05 - 1530 CST : Help make a webcartoonist happy this Christmas...

Hey folks! I've got a few things I want to get to today, so let's get right to it.

Help Geek Tragedy end this year with a bang...

Yeah, I'm at it again.  This is the part where I once again get down on my hands and knees and ask y'all to click that little vote button on the side of the screen there.  And like last month, those that vote will be able to get their hands on a special Geek Tragedy Voting wallpaper.  I don't have a preview pic up of the wallpaper yet, but let me just say this...nudity!  I can say no more.

Oh, and as an added incentive for people to vote this month, I'm giving something away ('cause lets face it, I'm not above dishing out bribes).  When you vote you'll notice a short "code phrase" written on the "Thank You!" page.  Starting today, and continuing right up until Christmas Eve I will be changing this phrase at random intervals.  All you have to do is write down the keywords, and send them to the address listed on the thank you page, and you'll get one entry into a draw.

Come Christmas Eve I will tally up all the entries and draw one e-mail.  The winner of the draw will get a copy of The Webcomic Hurricane Relief Telethon Book, and a signed colour print of any strip they'd like from the strip archives.  Plus you'll also get a free sketch of your favorite Geek Tragedy character.

And please only send one e-mail per vote / per "code phrase".  If I begin to get more e-mails sent to me then votes, I'll start requiring further information to help verify your vote.  For now though, I'm fine with the honor system.

Come on folks, I know if even half of you voted on a regular basis I'd be climbing that list like mad, so help a brother out here.  Thanks!

And here I thought I was oh so clever coming up with a Zombie Christmas story...

If you're enjoying the current Christmas / Zombie storyline you may get a kick out of the trailer for "The Heart of Christmas".

You see it turns out many moons before I ever started down this undead Christmas path, Peter Tarkulich (roofpig from the GT forum, who has also just started a webcomic of his own) had already shot a short film about a zombie who crashes a Christmas party and helps teach the people there about the true meaning of the holidays (and I'm pretty sure he eats some folk while he's at it).  I'm told the full film will be released on the site closer to Christmas, so you may want to keep checking back there from time to time.

And while you're there, be sure to check out his other work too.

All I want for Christmas is some freakin' sleep...

If everything goes to plan, than the "Christmas Day of The Dead" storyline should wrap up on Thursday, Dec. 22nd.  Then on Christmas day, I'll be posting a special Holiday splash page.  After that, I will be taking a week off from the strip, so you won't see any new strips from me till after the New Year (though I may be dropping by to do some updates here and there).

What are my big plans that week you may ask?  I intend to sleep, and read books.  Yeah, that may not seem like much to some of you guys, but those are two things I rarely seem to have time for nowadays, and I miss doing them both every so dearly!

.CA ya later GeekTragedy.ca...

Okay, that was possibly the worst header I've ever come up with.  Sorry about that.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that at this point I am about 98% sure that I will not be renewing my .ca address.  So for those of you who come to the site via redirection from www.geektragedy.ca should note that as of Dec. 10th that will no longer be an option.  As well, anyone sending me e-mails to my ed@geektragedy.ca address past that date will find their e-mails being bounced right back to them.

I'm pretty sure by now that most of you head straight to the .com at this point, but I figured it'd be worth mentioning just in case.

Okay, well I think that about does it for me.  I'm sure I've forgotten something here, but whatever it is, I guess it'll just have to wait till tomorrow.

Later,

-Ed

PS: Once again, I'm too tired to proofread right now.  So until I get a chance to do it later on, enjoy the typos!
