31 / JUL / 05 - 1330 CST: The Men of Geek Tragedy calendar...

I know most of my strips cater more closely to a male demographic, so I figured I'd try to do something special for my female viewers out there with today's strip.

So ladies, this one's for you.

Enjoy!

-Ed

30 / JUL / 05 - 1330 CST : Did I say yesterday, 'cause I meant today...

Okay folks, here is that Geek Tragedy news update I’ve been talking about for a few days. I’m not going to say that there maybe typos and spelling mistakes within it like I usually do though. A lot of you know me too well at this point, so it’s largely unneeded for me to say that every time. Beside, it’d be a lie anyway, as I don’t think there’s any "maybe" about it.

Master of my own domain name…

When I first considered going with the name Geek Tragedy for the strip, I made sure that I searched the web for two things before I went ahead with anything that may set the name in stone. The first was to see if there was already a webcomic out there named Geek Tragedy. And while granted, there were more hits for the term "geek tragedy" than I ever thought there would be, thankfully there wasn't a webcomic with the same name. 'Cause if there was, I most definitely would've been going back to the drawing board.

After all, the last thing I would have wanted to do was step on someone else's toes, or look like I lacked the forethought to do the most basic of research for my idea of a title. I mean sure, there may be a few thousand webcomics out there, but it’s not that large of a community that someone should have to worry about having two comics of the same name at this point, right?

The second thing I looked into was what "geektragedy" domains were open. I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed to find out that geektragedy.com was already taken. So disappointed in fact, that I almost reconsidered using the name altogether. Lucky for me though the .ca domain was still open, and being a Canadian, it was kind of a perfect fit.

However, that still didn't stop me from making a note of when the current registration for geekragedy.com was going to expire, and in turn checking the status of it every damn day once the renewal date had passed.

Well I'm happy to report that my obsessive compulsive lusting for that particular domain has finally paid off. And as of earlier this week, www.GeekTragedy.com is all mine baby! And while I have no immediate plans to switch over from my current domain, and will in fact keep the .ca as long as the GT universe is around, I will most likely use it once the new site design is complete.

Speaking of which…

Building the Tragedy…

I’m still plugging away at the new site design every chance I get, and it’s shaping up kinda perdy(ish) if I do say so myself. I’ve been able to show a few friends what it’s looking like, and thus far the feedback has been rather positive. Granted, that may be because none of them have the heart to tell me the truth, but even if that’s true, at this point I’m perfectly happy living in the illusionary world of non-suckage that they’ve managed to construct around me.

One of the big things that I’m trying to accomplish with the new design to make it so you guys can finally click back and forth through the strips without having to go over to the archives. Also I’m making sure the archives it self works a little bit more to my liking.

Unfortunately I still have no definite date as to when the new site will be launched. For the most part it will depend on how quickly I can narrow down a service provider that I think will work best for me at this early stage of the comic’s growth.

I’m sure you’re as sick of hearing this as I am of saying it, but…

Geek Tragedy T-shirts are coming. At this point, I am basically just waiting to hear back as to exactly when they’re going to be finished.

I know some of you have been waiting patiently for quite a while (a few months at last count), but trust me when I say that I am more anxious than anyone to get these things out there. Plus I’ve come up with ideas for at least two more shirts that I’d like to get made as well, but until I see exactly how well the first one is received, I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself. The last thing I’d like to see happen is for me to wind up with a stockpile of shirts just sitting in my already overly cluttered office.

While we’re on the subject of stockpiles building up in my office…

A little piece of me…

I currently have an ever increasing number of Geek Tragedy strips kicking around, and so I’m thinking maybe it’s time that I part with a few of them. So here’s what I want to do. I’d like to make up little packages of select GT strips and offer them for sale on the site.

The first part of the package will obviously be the original artwork for the strip it self. Now, when I do the strips, I draw them out and ink them by hand so all of my original work is in black and white. Which means, most of them pretty much look like this before they’ve been scanned into the computer.

As you can see, the original art doesn’t have any colour, words, or backgrounds. So the second part of the package will be a glossy, full colour, signed print of the finished strip that will better represent what you’re used to seeing on the site.

They last part of the package will be a small, original pencil sketch of any one Geek Tragedy character of your choosing. I’m not sure what the size limitation for this sketch will be, but I’ll be sure to have that all worked out before the strips go on sale.

I’m also kicking around the idea of having these all pre-mounted together so that they could be easily framed or whatever. But that’s just getting ahead of myself at this point I think. After all, I haven’t even worked out a price for these packages yet, nor if there would be any kind of demand for them to be offered in the first place.

Two things I’d like to mention about this idea before I move on. First off, let me just assure you that the idea behind this isn’t an attempt on my part to be able to retire early. Nor is it a way for me to begin living a life of leisure filled with ample amounts pizza, Diet Dr. Pepper, and whores (though truth be told, even if I had money, I don’t see myself as the whore mongering type). Rather it’s born out of my desire to be able to generate just a little bit of money, so that I can in turn put it back into the site (though I wouldn’t mind having the funds to splurge on a pizza from time to time either).

The second thing is, I have absolutely no idea when these packages will be available. Until they are though, you may see some weird things happening on the store page every now and then. Please ignore any shenanigans you notice there. Even if it looks like something might be up there for sale in the next little while, unless I’ve posted info indicating otherwise, it’s just me doing some tests.

And thanks to my need for sleep…

I think I’m going to stop my blabbing on and on, and wrap this up now. I did have a few more things to mention, but nothing that I can’t save for another day.

Later all,

-Ed

28 / JUL / 05 - 1430 CST : Grey Area - Pt. II"

It's Thursday, and that can only mean a new strip has arrived.

I usually go to bed around this time, but I'm pretty wired right now, so I'm going to have a snack and then try and get that Geek Tragedy related news that I mentioned a couple days ago up before I start crashing.  No, I'm serious, I have a good feeling about it this time.  I am almost certain I'll have it up by the end of the day.

Really, I mean it!

Okay, tomorrow at the latest...I swear.

What?

Quit looking at me like that damn it!  After all, I've got to sleep sometime.  Trust me on this one.  Those of you who have seen the bags that hang under my eyes in the best of conditions can attest to just how much I need my sleep.

-Ed

PS: While I am apologizing for not writing in a timely fashion, let me just say to those of you who have been kind enough to e-mail me lately, I'm sorry for my less than stellar return rate with replies.  It's not because I don't care, it's because I am an ass.

26 / JUL / 05 - 1215 CST : "Grey Area - Pt. I"

Today's strip is now up.

I have a few bits of Geek Tragedy news to pass along to you guys, so look for a much longer blog post tomorrow.  I'll give you the scoop on everything that has been happening in the GT universe then.

For now, I'm off to bed!

Later folks,

-Ed

25 / JUL / 05 - 1300 CST : He's earned it...

Hey folks.

Just dropping by to give a bit of a spoiler about tomorrow's strip.  All you Grey fans will be happy to hear that it's going to kick off a brief story starring your favorite yellow haired geek.

I was hoping to have it done before I went to bed today so that I could get it up right at midnight before I go to work, but it's looking like I'll be posting it early Tuesday afternoon instead.

Well, that's all for now.  I'm off to bed.

Later,

-Ed

24 / JUL / 05 - 1100 CST : "Watchful Eyes - Pt. III"

The new strip is now up.

To answer a couple questions about the last strip, no, Matt is not an actual person.  Well, I mean I'm sure there are people out there named Matt running around, but they've never e-mailed me about the strip.

However, Mary and Travis are real.  And let me just take another moment to...

Congratulate Mary and Travis on their engagement!

That's it for now folks.  Later,

-Ed

21 / JUL / 05 - 1545 CST : "Viewer Feedback - Pt II"

The new strip is now up.

Today is the last day of my vacation, and I head back to working at midnight (and seeing as how I am still wide awake at this time, I'm guessing it's going to feel like a loooooong first day back).  What this means is that Tuesday's and Thursday's strip should be going back to being posted right at midnight (or early afternoons at the latest).

One other thing.  Publishing a comic online can be a lot of work, but one of the advantages of doing it this way is that the cost is relatively low (at least in the early stage that I'm in it is).  Self-publishing an actual physical comic on the other hand, takes a fair sized in investment (of both cash and guts).  I truly respect anyone who is willing to take that kind of plunge.

For this reason I'd like to make mention of a local Winnipeg writer who has teamed up with a local artist, and has taken such a plunge.  If you have a minute, you may want to check out what Sean McGinity has been up to.

Alrighty folks, if I can't get to sleep, then I may be posting a little later on.  If not though, see y'all tomorrow.

-Ed

19 / JUL / 05 - 2020 CST : Sooner than I thought...

Well, after a long period of not posting anything other than the strips themselves, and the short blog entries to go along with them, I seem to be making up for lost time now.  I guess rummaging through all the junk that has been building up in my office has sort of inspired me.

Anyway, here are the series of Frank sketches and pics that I was talking about.  Watch in amazement as he goes from crappy looking to...uhh...slightly less crappy looking in just a few short years.

Okay, I better just post them before I change my mind.

Well I think that's all for tonight.

Bye folks,

-Ed

1910 CST: The next two panels...

Okay, I've dug up the next two panels that I did for the "Walrus Bride" story line.  I never ended up taking them past the pencils stage, but I figured you guys may get a kick out of taking look at them.

I still can't remember exactly when I did these panels or the ones I posted in "The Strip" section.  I'm kinda kicking myself now for not dating almost any of my past work. Oh well, guess it's too late now.

Hopefully by the end of tonight, or sometime tomorrow, I'll have a series of Frank sketches that stretch from around three years ago right up until the site started up.  They're in a similar vein as the ones you saw with the "Evolution of Noname" write up I did a couple months ago (which you can still find in the "Meet the Geeks" section).

Later,

-Ed

1430 CST: "Frank - The Early Years"

Just about to post the new / old strip.

I wasn't going to change a thing with it, and planned on showing it to you guys warts and all, but I admit I did to some touch up work on it.  The only major thing I did was redo the text so that it was actually legible.  Other than that, I just cleaned it up a bit here and there.

Don't worry though, it's still fairly crappy looking.

More Frank stuff to come later.

-Ed

1110 CST : A blast from the past...

Hey folks!

One of my little work projects that I'd set for myself while on vacation has been to try and tame the chaos that is my home office. Currently it's a jumbled mess, filled with stacks of books, art supplies, pop cans, and sketches.

Well while I was sifting through the mountain of crap that has been building up over the past few months I found a little bit of Geek Tragedy history. A four panel strip involving Frank and a mail-order walrus bride. I don't quite remember when I did it, but as near as I could guess it was about a year or so ago before the site was even up.

At the time I did it, I hadn't conceived of Casey's character, nor had I worked out what was to become the GT story line that you've now come to know and love (or at the very least tolerate). Now I've been trying to think of some way to incorporate this strip into a future story arc, but I'm not really sure when, or even how, I'd be able to accomplish that feat.

So, seeing as how I was planning on breaking with continuity anyway this week, I'm just going to go ahead and post this strip later today. Who knows, maybe one day it'll be revamped and reincorporated into the story after all.

In fact, I think I'll be posting a bunch of past Frank related work today. Sort of a "Frank retrospective" if you will. Plus, I may throw in a few Grey and Noname related works too. You know, if I find anything that may sufficiently humiliate me for your viewing enjoyment.

Anyway, expect to see fair amount of stuff posted today.

Later folks,

-Ed

PS: Just so you know, to make way for this little self indulgent Frank history lesson, the strip I was planning on putting up today (which was sort of the wrap up on the "Viewer Feedback" strip) will be up on Thursday instead. I promise you though, come Sunday, I'll be getting back to the GT story line.

18 / JUL / 05 - 2310 CST : Well I did say I'd have something to report...

But unfortunately I can't really report on it yet.

But I can tell you that my vacation, while almost over, is going well.  Still, I'm hoping to have some news for you guys soon.  Very soon.

Till then,

-Ed

17 / JUL / 05 - 1655 CST : "Viewer Feedback"

I was planning on continuing with the regular Geek Tragedy story line today, but I've decided to go a slightly different direction for the time being.  You can check out "The Strip" page to see what I mean.

I'll have some things to report to you folks either later tonight, or sometime tomorrow.

Later,

-Ed

14 / JUL / 05 - 1530 CST : "Watchful Eyes - Pt. II"

Hey folks.

The new strip is up.

Plus, if you look up above this post, you'll see a couple of new links.  I've actually got one more to put up, but I'll be doing that later. I'm also not too happy about where I've had to place them on the site, but my choices were limited. Just one of the reasons I've started building my own site design from scratch.

Anyway, If you have a second, please give 'em a click.  It may not seem like much, but trust me, it'll really help me out.

Later all,

Ed

12 / JUL / 05 - 1620 CST : "Watchful Eyes - Pt. I"

Today's strip is now up.

While I'm on vacation I've decided to flip my sleeping habits around to that of a "normal" person, so I'm currently sleeping during the night, and awake during the day.  What this means is that for the next week, the new strips will be posted between 4 and 5 pm, instead of at midnight or in the wee hours of the morning like they usually are.

Just wanted to pass that bit of info along in case anyone was wondering why they're showing up so much later in the day.

Later folks,

-Ed

10 / JUL / 05 - 1640 CST : "Frank's Critique Pt. IV"

A little later in the day than usual, but Sunday's strip is now up.

As I mentioned before, I'm off work for the next little while, so I'm hoping to catch up on some of the writing for the site.  Keep a look out for more blog updates, and a new "With Apologies" in the next week or so.

Plus, I may be able to give you a glimpse of the new site design soon.

Till then,

-Ed

07 / JUL / 05 - 0715 CST : "Frank's Critique Pt. III"

I tried as hard as I could to refrain from making another Star Wars reference so soon after the Vader urn strips, but it seems I just couldn't help myself in today's strip.

Later folks,

-Ed

05 / JUL / 05 - 0355 CST : "Frank's Critique Pt. II"

Forgot to post this before I left for work, but the new strip is up.

Been asked about this recently, so I just wanted to remind you folks that the "With Apologies" section hasn't been retired.  It's just sort of..."resting" while I spend my time struggling with the site redesign.

I've got some time off work coming up in the next week so with any luck I'll have a chance to play catch up then.  Hang in there folks, I'm sure I'll be back to writing long winded, mindless "WA" articles, and blog post in no time.

Till then,

-Ed

03 / JUL / 05 - 1115 CST : "Frank's Critique"

Hey all!

The new strip is now up.

Now I'm not sure how many of you have seen, or at least know of "Last Tango in Paris", but I hope it's a fair number of you.  Otherwise, I'm pretty sure this joke won't make any sense.

Later,

-Ed
