30 / SEP / 06 - 2009 CST : "Con Pros - Pt. XIX"

Well it may be in black and white for the time being, but at least the strip is up now.  I'll have the colours done sometime soon.

29 / SEP / 06 - 1327 CST : It's Friday! You know what that means...

To paraphrase a friend of mine," Friday is the day of the week that you tell everyone that the strip won't be up till Saturday."

Well unfortunately it turns out today won't really be an exception.  So yes, even though Friday's strip is almost always up a day late, please look on the bright side in that I do still manage to serve up my target of three strips a week almost every single week of the year (barring debilitating illnesses and family obligations that is).

I told you they were real...

You may remember a comment I made a month or two ago about how, on top of all his other work, Lar deSouza has the uncanny ability to produce top quality (and unlike myself, punctual) strips six days a week, every week, over at Least I Could Do.  It was my speculation at the time that Lar had somehow figured out a way to breed a vast army of artistically advanced clones, or "cLARns", to do his bidding for him, and that was the secret to how he could managed such a feat.

At the time you all thought this clone nonsense was just the crazed ravings of a madman, but I knew I was on to something there.  So the very next day I set off on a mission to find proof of his foul science experiments and expose them to the world.  Well I'm happy to say that my vigilance has finally paid off!

Through the use of a hidden camera that had been smuggled into a secret underground laboratory nestled deep within the Ontario wilderness I was finally able to obtain photographic evidence that "cLARns" do in fact exist.  By clicking on the following link you will see one such "cLARn", still in it's infancy, shortly after being harvested from it incubation chamber.

Be warned, some may find the following image...disturbing.

Who's the madman now, huh? HUH!?

Well that's all for now folks.  I'll try to pop by tonight with an update, or some sort of preview pic of the strip (which come hell or high water will be up tomorrow).

28 / SEP / 06 - 1358 CST : Back tracking...

For those of you who may be interested, Monday's strip has now been coloured.  Who knows, maybe this'll start a trend and I'll eventually get around to colouring all the B&W strips in the archives...or maybe not.

0841 CST : "Con Pros - Pt. XVIII"

Oops.

Y'know I think this is the first time that strip has ever been posted on time, but the blog post letting y'all know that has been a day late.  So yeah, the strip has been up since yesterday afternoon (as some of you may have already noticed. Sorry about the lack of a heads up on that folks.

I'll try to come back later on today and drop a little more info here, but if not then I'll see you tomorrow.  And yes, I will actually let you know here when Friday's strip is up.

26 / SEP / 06 - 2156 CST : Sleep is good...

Hey folks.

Sorry the colours for the last strip aren't up yet.  I am working on the them right now though, but after going to bed early and waking up late I'm waaay behind.

Also I do have some stuff I wanted to talk about as far as the last strip goes, but at this point I'll most likely just do a little write up in the near future on how the whole "Con Pros" storyline has been going thus far.

Well I'm off to photo-shop and then get ready for work.

25 / SEP / 06 - 1347 CST : "Con Pros - Pt. XVII"

Hey folks.

I'm posting the strip in it's black and white form for now, and will finish off the colours tomorrow.  I would've liked to get them done today, but I'm heading off to see Bad Religion tonight so I have to get up a lot earlier than normal.

I'll talk more about the strip tomorrow.

Y'know, it's probably a lot easier for you guys to see the newest strip if I actually bother to post it to the server, huh?

Sorry about that folks.

22 / SEP / 06 - 1604 CST : Night strip...

Hey folks.

The strip won't be up until later on tonight (or possibly in the wee hours of the morning).  I meant to post this earlier, but I was in desperate need of some sleep when I got home from work this morning so I didn't have a chance.

It looks like I only have a couple hours of work left on it, but given everything I have to do today, at this point I know I won't have a chance to even touch it for quite a while.  To keep you tied over till then, here's a small sneak preview:

21 / SEP / 06 - 0924 CST : I told you I was tired when I wrote that yesterday...

For the record, "ninjaed" is a verb, not an adjective.  The correction has been made.  It's amazing how much clearer these things are to me once I've had some sleep.

20 / SEP / 06 - 0911 CST : "Con Pros - Pt. XV"

It should be known that as I write this I am doing so while standing on a foundation of caffeine and little else. So if parts of this entry are complete gibberish, you now know why. In fact, if you ever want to gauge just how tired I am while I write a post just do the following.

     1) Try to read what I wrote that day.

2) Ask yourself, "Self, did what I just read come across as something that was hammered out by a drunken monkey banging on a keyboard?"

If yourself says "Yes" : then I'm tired.

If yourself says "No" : then either I managed to get some sleep that day, or else you've managed to read that write-up shortly after I received a phone call from my mother asking me if I'm "on the drugs" while I write and have since rewrote the parts that didn't make any sense.

Oh, did I mention that the strip was up? No? Well it is.

Speaking of the strip I feel the need speak of it a little more (that gibberish wasn't caused by being tired btw, it was just plain old bad writing).

First off I doubt it made a whole lotta sense to anyone who isn't familiar with games like World of Warcraft or Everquest. And given the fact that this isn't a gaming comic, that might include a lot of you out there. So allow me to define the term "Ninjaed" as it pertains to the strip.

Ninjaed [nin-jud]

-verb

To take loot (see - treasure or booty) that you have no right to from a recently killed creature within an online game. Often, but not always, once taken this loot cannot be given back to the rightful person even if the person who took it wanted to (which they probably don't).

[Origin - Derived from ninja. Online eqiv. NIN (to be a total douche) + JA (bag)]

So there you have it.

Oh, and if you're wondering whether I'll be doing any more strips in the future that deal with jokes that seem to solely target gamers, then the answer would be yes…but not many. Because even though Grey is an avid computer / console gamer who I'm sure would have a wealth of experiences that could support that type of humour, I'm not so lucky (though I sure used to be). And seeing as how I write all of Grey's strips, I don't really see that particular part of his life hitting centre stage all too often. And while I did have enough past knowledge to be able to create today’s offering, for the most part I think I'll be leaving the gamer type humour to those who know how to do it right.

Well that's all for now folks.

19 / SEP / 06 - 1557 CST : No Kirk in my valley...

Hey folks.

Some of you may remember me mentioning here and in the forum that I had attended ValleyCon in Fargo last year, and intend to do so again this year.  Well I just recieved an e-mail from a friend saying that William Shatner, one of the big draws for this year, is no longer attending due to scheduling conflicts.

The first thing I thought when I read this was "Oh man, do I ever feel bad for Tony Tilton and the other con organizers who must be going through a spot of hell right now!"

Okay, Geek Tragedy may not be the widest read webcomic out there, but I do know that there are quite a few people who read it that have attended Valleycon in the past and are currently planning to attend this year as well.  And so just in case any of you out there reading this are now considering not attending Valleycon in October because of the lack of Shatner, let me just say that you're making a huge mistake!

I mean sure, no Kirk is kind of a let down, but this con is still well worth checking out!  Hell, I know I had an amazingly fun time last year and it didn't have anything to do with what guests they did or didn't have in attendance (well maybe it had a little to do with certain guests, but still).  For me cons are about the people who attend them.  It's the fans who make 'em worth going to.  And let me tell you, the group of folks who come to this con are a blast to hang out with!

Now I hate to even bring this up, but I know there may be a couple of people who are thinking it, so I feel I should.  If anyone out there believes that Valleycon has pulled a "bait and switch" with this Shatner thing, think again.  Last minute guest cancellations happen folks.  It's a fact of con life.  But in no way do I feel that this was an intentional ploy to draw people to the con and then screw them over.

Seriously, as much as a disappointment as this may be to the people going to the con, I promise you it's ten times as much so for those who are running it.  No one organizing a con would want this type of headache so close to the event.  As well, I actually got meet Tony Tilton briefly at last years con, and from the time I got to talk to him I can honestly say that he is a very genuine person who I feel only wants to put on the best damn con he can each year.  Plus from what I've read on the Valleycon website, he and the other organizers are doing their best to make it up to everyone for Shatner's cancellation.

In fact, I've got so much faith that you'll have a great time going to this con, that along with the discount that Valleycon is offering on passes, I personally will throw in my own incentive.  If you go to Valleycon and somehow manage to not enjoy yourself, I will give you one free belly-rub.*  You heard me!  I'm so sure you'll have a good time that I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is hand where your belly is!

So there you go folks.  I hope to see a bunch of you out there this October!

Okay, my work here is done.

Later,

-Ed

*Belly rub offer is only open to those that shower daily and while supplies last.  Any genies that may pop out of your navel during the belly rub, along with any wishes that may be granted from such an occurrence will be the property of the rubber, not the rubbie.  While this offer is also open to men as well as women, I'd prefer it if you were a woman. I mean seriously guys, why would you want another dude touching your tummy anyway?

17 / SEP / 06 - 1544 CST : Here's the plan...

The strip that was supposed to be up on Friday will now be Monday's strip.  I tried to get it done before then, but between my cold and helping my mother get ready to put her house up for sale it just wasn't in the cards.  Look at it this way though, it will be a full page strip so content wise it is kinda like two strips in one...sorta.

Anyway, I'll talk to you guys tomorrow.  Thanks for waiting and understanding about the strip.

In the mean time you can check out a bit of fan art I've done up and revamped over at my livejournal.

16 / SEP / 06 - 1604 CST : I haven't forgotten about you guys...

Hey folks.

First off let me just say something totally unrelated to the site.

U-Haul fucking sucks!  I'd write more about the level of their suckage, but I'm still too pissed to even get into it.

There, now that that's out of the way...

I'm still hoping to have Friday's strip up before the weekend is out, but I'm not gonna lie to you guys, it's going rather poorly.  If I can at least get through the inking I'll post a B&W version of the strip.  However, coughing fits and inking are most definitely not a match made in heaven.

Yes, I'm still bitching about my cold.  That's what I do when I'm sick.  I bitch.  After all, I am a man, so it shouldn't be too surprising that I whine like a baby when I'm suffering through a cold.

Anyway, enough moaning, time for me to try and get some more work done.

15 / SEP / 06 - 1637 CST : I'm toast...

Sorry folks, but I'm off to bed to dream of perfect health.  I wish I had the strip done for you, but it's just not an option at this point (I'm beginning to think trying to do a full page strip today instead of one of the short ones wasn't such a good idea).

Now I know I promised you something, and so here are a few bits and pieces of the pencils for today's strip.  It's kinda rough, and a poor consolation I know, but it is something.

Later,

1451 CST : While you're waiting...

You may want to head over to PvP and check out the guest strip Lar and Ryan from Least I Could Do did over there (and yes, I just put four links in a single sentence...all hail to the link whore!).

As well you may get a kick out of Kurtz's little diagram depicting the way plans to prevent or at least minimize the chances of catching colds at cons.  Given the current state of my health I found it rather amusing.

That's all for now folks.  I'm still working away at the strip and will try to have a little something to show for it in the next hour or so.

Later,

-Ed

1022 CST : Thanks folks...

Hey guys.

Thanks to those of you who dropped me "Get well soon" notes, and let me know that despite not having the next part of "Con Pros" up that you at least enjoyed the way I told it wasn't going to be up.

I'm still sick unfortunately, but none the less I am plugging away at today's strip and will definitely have something to show you guys by tonight. Granted I don't exactly know what that something might be, but hopefully it'll be the finished strip.  However, don't be too disappointed if it end's up being a B&W version instead, or even just a couple preview panels.  It all depends on how much sleep my body dictates that I need today.

Anyway, bear with me here and I'm sure I'll be back to 100% in no time.

I also wanted to let you guys know that tomorrow's strip most likely won't be up till late tomorrow night.  I'll try to get it done earlier, but we'll see.

11 / SEP / 06 - 1603 CST : Late start...

For those of you who are wondering, yes, there will in fact be a strip today.  I just haven't been able to get to the colouring yet.  Luckily the pencils and inks were already done last week so I didn't have to rush through them once I got home after the weekend.

In fact, the strip you'll be seeing later today was originally supposed to be Friday's strip, but then I realized that I maybe I should take a bit more time to explain Noname's behavior with his potential customers.

Speaking of today's strip, it'll be sort of a brief throw back to a previous strip which I put in place to set up this years Christmas tale (yes, I sometimes plan that far ahead).  I actually meant to further that particular storyline prior to "Con Pros", but it slipped my mind.  Anyway, you'll see what I'm talking about later tonight when I get the new comic up.

For now though, I better get back to work on it.

But before I do I wanted to share something I did up for the wedding I went to this weekend.  You see the bride and groom had everyone from the wedding party pick a song and then they made up CD's as wedding favors for everyone who attended.  And so I whipped up a little pic to be used as the CD cover.

It wasn't my best work I'm afraid, but they seemed happy with and that's what really matters.

1158 CST : This has nothing to do with the strip...

But if you're a fan of violent Japanese films, you've got to check out Battle Royale!  I just took a two hour break from today's strip to watch it (so I guess in a way this does have something to do with the strip), and good lord was it ever worth it!  The only way I can even think of describing it is to say if Lord of the Flies and Series 7 made sweet love and had a homicidal baby, then this film is what it'd be like once it hit the 9th grade.

Yeah, I know that sounds like total gibberish, but after you watch it you'll understand.

Anyway, I'm off to try my best to control this urge I have to immediately go watch the sequel, and instead go and finish off the strip.

05 / SEP / 06 - 1259 CST : Outage makeup...

Hey folks.

It seems the site was down for something like 7 hours last night when I was at work.  I don't know how or why this happened, but I'm sorry it did.

Anyway, to make up for it let me share a couple things with you that you might enjoy.  First up:

Housdgasm...

Just over a week ago I saw a post on Stitch's livejournal saying that Ali Graham of Housd fame was clearing out a bunch of past site merch.  One of the items that was up for sale were two of the last remaining shirts that Ali sold during his first ever convention appearance.  Legend has it that only twelve of these shirts were ever made, and anyone who dons one would be granted powers far beyond the understanding of mere mortals.  So being both a huge fan of Housd and on a never-ending quest to gain superpowers, I jumped at the chance to buy one.

Well when I went to check my mail today I was thrilled and surprised to find that my shirt had already arrived (I mean seriously, should something from the UK arrive in less time than it usually takes me to receive stuff from the US?).  Well after tearing open the envelope to get at the newest addition to my wardrobe I found that Ali (or Stitch...I can't be sure which one was responsible) had also included some other goodies as well.  One of which was a bit of original artwork depicting Stitch in all his gothy glory.

The thing that really struck me about this pic was that if you added a bit of mullet-like party to the back of Stitch's hair, this could be a portrait of me in Jr. High.

And no, I'm not divulging the fact that I went the way of the mullet for a time with even the smallest amount of pride.

So let me take this moment to say, "Thanks Ali!"  Given that we're an ocean apart I was never sure if I'd ever actually have the chance to meet you in person and in turn beg a sketch off you, so this made my day!

Cook's Kool-Aid...

A few weeks ago some of my friends told me about a this comic named Dane Cook, and said I should check out his stand-up. Now yes, I realize that I am the last person on the planet to have heard about Dane Cook, but in my defense I am practically a hermit, so give me a break!

Anyway.  I finally got around to heading over to his site and I don't think I've stopped laughing since.  I strongly recommend that you check out his site, or YouTube, or wherever you may find his work and see just how funny this guy is.  In fact, let me give you a little taste right now and share with you a bit of animation that you can find on his site that has been built around part of his act.

Well that's all for now folks.  See ya tomorrow when the next strip is up.

04 / SEP / 06 - 0001 CST : "Con Pros - Pt. X"

No, you're not hallucinating, the strip is in fact up early for the first time in...oh, hell.  I don't know.  I can't even remember the last time a comic was posted relatively on time, never mind early.

Now in case you're wondering how or why this miracle happened, I'll give you the scoop.  This coming weekend I will have the pleasure of standing up as a groomsman beside my good friend Travis Walters (some of you may know him as Vitamin-T on the forum) as he gets married to the lovely Mary Lebedynski.  Trust me when I say they make a fine couple and are very much in love.

Either that or Mary just wants to score herself a much easier to spell last name...but I'm pretty sure it's the love thing.

Anyway, because of the wedding, I'll be unable to work on the strip Friday.  So instead of missing an update, I decided to kick my ass this weekend and get as far ahead of with the comic as possible.  And as it stands right now, Wednesday's strip needs only to be coloured, and Fridays strip is well into the pencils stage.  So everything should be pretty much set.

Yes, I know.  I'm just asking for something to go wrong now, aren't I?

Anyway, if I don't drop by to say hi before then, I'll see y'all on Wednesday.

Later,

01 / SEP / 06 - 1745 CST : "Con Pros - Pt. IX"

Hey guys.

I've put up a pencils only version of today's strip for now.  I want to try and ink the strip digitally for a change and see how it goes, but I've only ever done it once before so I'm not sure if I'll get that and the colours done before I head into work.  So instead of keeping the strip from you guys any longer I've decided to show y'all what I've got so far.

Anyway, I'll try to get the rest of it done before work, but if not then you'll see it up sometime tomorrow.

Later,

-Ed
