31 / AUG / 07 - 1355 CST : Friends before colours...

Hey folks.

I'll have the colours for the strip finished before the weekend is over, though I'm hoping they'll be done by tomorrow morning at the latest.  Normally on a Friday I'd be more than happy to stay up to get them done, but I'm heading out tonight to hang out with some friends I haven't seen in a looong time, so I really need to head to bed a bit earlier than usually do.

Anyway, I'll see ya when the colours are done, but till then, have a great (long for some of us) weekend.

30 / AUG / 07 - 0903 CST : It's not procrastination if you get something accomplished while you do it...

Hey folks.

I was about to start working on Friday's strip, but then I figured that some of that drawing time might be better used by taking a few minutes to drop by here and play a bit of catch up.  Y'know, in case you guys were wondering if I forgot this section of the site even existed.

Okay, I've got a fair bit of con related stuff I wanted to mention so let's start there.  First off, the still unfinished Connecticon Con Report is...still not finished.  Yes, I know finishing it would be kind of a moot point given how long ago the con was, but I do intend to finish up eventually (as there are a few people I really wanted to mention in there but never got the chance to).  However, in the future, I don't think I'll be writing con reports.  At least not ones that go on and on, which I feel mine do.

In the future I'll most likely just be focusing more on pics and less on the words surrounding them.  Of course that means I'm going to have to actually take more pics at cons instead of just using my camera as some forgotten paperweight like I usually do, but I'm sure if I put my mind to it I'll manage.

And now it's time for hypocrisy...

Okay, I know what I just said I wasn't going to be writing con reports anymore, but I did in fact write one recently.  ImagineFX magazine has a convention section called "Last year I went to..." which comes out just before a current year's con happens, and talks about someone's experience at that some con the previous year.  Well a few weeks ago I was contacted about doing a little write up on last year's Manitoba Comic Con for that section, and so I quite happily agreed.

Yes, I know I'm a very, very bad man for doing that before finishing off the waaaaay overdue CT con report, but they only wanted 300 words.  Plus it's not like I have magazines beating down my door trying to get me to throw some words their way, so I wasn't about to pass it up.

Anyway, the issue I'm in comes out late September to early October depending where you are on the globe.  Don't worry though, I'm sure I'll be the first person to let you know once it has hit the newstands.

But enough living in the past...

Now that I'm all done reliving last years Manitoba Comic Con let's talk about 2007's for a bit.

My home town con is only a couple months away and I find myself getting more and more excited as the days tick away.  Partly because I just really enjoy doing cons, but mostly due to the fact that this year looks like it's going to be a lot bigger than last year.  Both in regards to size, and content.

In fact, they've just added Marc Wolfe and...wait for it...Margot Kidder to the special guests list!  I'm also looking forward to seeing a lot of the artists I met last year in the Artist's Alley again this year, as I am totally useless at keeping in touch with people the way I should, so this may be my only chance to say "hi" for another year.

Granted I'm still kinda disappointed that  I won't be going to Valley Con this year due to them moving their date to the same weekend, but then again they haven't really updated their site with any info in a while, so it's kinda tough to know what exactly I'll be missing.  Still, I wish I could go to both (clones take waaaay too long to hatch, damn it!).

And on one last (semi) con related note...

One of my biggest regrets about Paradise Comicon this year was that I didn't take the time to commission a sketch from Danielle Corsetto of Girls With Slingshots fame.  However, she's recently updated her "Con Sketches" page, so at least now I can get a much better look at what I missed out on.  Seriously, check them out and just try to tell me that they're not worth their weight in gold.

Of course given how light paper is I'm thinking that wasn't the best phrase I could've used to make my point, but still, they are soooo worth buying (I'll be picking one up next year for sure!).

And on a personal note which only two people in the world (including myself) will care about...

Stephan!  I swear to you we will get to talk to each other on the phone before our respective retirements (granted by then I may be too senile to remember my own name, never mind yours, but it will happen!).

Okay folks, that's all for now.  See ya tomorrow when the next strip is up.

27 / AUG / 07 - 1527 CST : A bit of a face lift...

Hey folks.

Well there are two things you probably noticed about today's strip.  First off, it's not coloured yet.  That I will get to tomorrow so that I can get a decent amount of sleep before work for a change.  I would've had it done today, but I got caught up redoing the last panel of the strip and ran short on time (it's still not looking the way I wanted, but it's as close as I'm going to get at this point I think).

The second thing is I finally got around to giving Noname a nose-job. That's right, after two and a half years, the man has nostrils at last.  Not sure how y'all feel about that stylistic change, but personally, I'm feeling pretty good about it.

Okay, I'm heading off to bed now, but like I said before though, the colours will done tomorrow.  Then on Wednesday there will be a new Geek Tragedy Squared up.  And yes, next week I'll be trying my hand at updating that section twice a week (Tuesday's and Thursdays most likely).

Later,

-Ed

PS:  I also fixed a small lighting effect on Friday's strip.

24 / AUG / 07 - 1159 CST : Same old, same old...

Hey folks.

Spent most of the day doing some running around, but now that I'm back, I'm hard at work on the strip.  It'll be up later on in the evening (which seems to have become the norm as of late).  I've been kinda looking forward to this one too, as it should begin to explain why this story arc is called Friends Overshare.

Anyway, I'll see you once the strip is finished.

22 / AUG / 07 - 1108 CST : Sleep before squares...

Hey folks.

I'll be finishing up the next Geek Tragedy Squared and posting it later tonight after I've caught up a bit on my sleep.  Also I wanted to let y'all know that I'm planning on doing two of them each week come September.  Which means the site will start updating every weekday except Wednesdays from then on out (knock on wood).

Okay, that's all for now.

19 / AUG / 07 - 1543 CST : I hate to move it, move it...

Hey folks.

Been pretty busy this week with non-site stuff this late week.  Plus I've been helping my mother move this weekend, so unfortunately I haven't had much time time to post here or on the forum lately, but hopefully I'll be able to make up for it this week.  Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know why I've been so quite lately.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go lay down and wait for the rarely used muscles I've been taxing this weekend to start cramping up on me.

17 / AUG / 07 - 2048 CST : Sleep, then talk...

Hey folks.

Sorry you had to wait so long for the strip, but I ran into a few problems.  Still, it's fully coloured and up on the right day of the week, so that's something at least.

Anyway, I'll have more to say say later (both here and on the forum), but for now I need to grab some Z's.

1515 CST : When good ideas go wrong...

Hey folks.

Just letting you know that the strip is coming, it's just taking me a little while to unscrew up something I managed to do by trying a new way of doing the line work.  Oh yeah, I'm also trying to figure out what happened to all the coloured versions of Monday's strip, as it seems the jpg you see above is the only proof I have that I ever bothered to redo the B&W version.  Which, seeing as how I usually save a million times a minute when I'm colouring, make no goddamn sense whatsoever.

Alrighty, back to work.

15 / AUG / 07 - 1651 CST : Squared away...

Hey folks.

Okay, about today's Geek Tragedy Squared...

I'm a huge fan of the "I'm a Mac. I'm a PC." ads, and truth be told I would love to have a Mac if for no other reason than to do all my artwork on it.  However, I just can't help but feel sorry for the PC guy, and you just know he's going to go postal one of these days.  Plus I've been trying to find some way of using that iSOCKET line for over a year now, and I figured this was my chance.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is, please don't send me e-mails defending Macs, 'cause I'm well aware of how good they are at what they do, and I don't have any strong feelings about their use one way or another.

Alrighty guys, it's back to bed for me.

14 / AUG / 07 - 1809 CST : Colours and squares...

Hey folks.

If I can manage to sit in front of my computer for an hour or two without being interrupted then I'll have the colours done before I go into work.  If not, then they'll be up tomorrow morning.  Also I'll have another Geek Tragedy Squared up tomorrow for y'all to check out.

13 / AUG / 07 - 1951 CST : A strip of gray...

Hey folks.

Well I'm still working on the colours, but it doesn't look I'll be done them before I have to head off to work tonight, so I've gone ahead and an posted a B&W (and gray) version of the strip for the time being.  I'll try to get them done by tomorrow though so you won't have to wait too much longer.

Okay, I'm going to try and sneak in a nap before work.

Later,

1446 CST : I did it for the kids...

Hey folks.

Once again the strip won't be posted till later on in the evening, as I spent a good part of my weekend (the part I usually spend working on the site) getting my page for the Kid's Book Project finished.  Anyway, I'm back to work tonight, so if it's getting too close to the time where I need get ready to head out, and I'm not finished the colours yet, I'll just go ahead and post a B&W of the strip to tie y'all over.

Okay, bad to work for me folks.

10 / AUG / 07 - 1244 CST : Late start...

Hey folks.

I got kind of a late start on colouring the strip today, but I'll have it done and up by this evening.

Alrighty, I better get back at it.

08 / AUG / 07 - 1503 CST : A new type of Noname...

Hey folks.  Long time no talk.

Well I'm fully off of my hiatus and back into the regular GT storyline.  And now that I am, I wanted to bring up a couple of things about what you can expect from the site in the months ahead.

First off, you may (or may not) have noticed a few things about Monday's strip that are a bit different from the offerings I've given you in the past.  For starters, it's a bit larger than the ones I usually do.  It's the same width, but three inches longer (insert your own penis joke here). What this has allowed me to do is put a bit more depth into the strip both in regards to the art and the content, which will become the standard from now on for the regular strips.

The second thing is I'm still trying to cool off the colours I use.  Granted this fact has been is kinda muddied in this last strip because I had to darken the it to help illustrate the blackout that's happening, but trust me, It's a much softer palette.

This is all kind of a work in progress, and the skin colour is just one part of the new palette I'm not happy with (it's a little too washed out), so you might see a lot of changes in this area in the weeks ahead.  Still, I think I'm at least on the right track here.

Geek Tragedy squared...

As I mentioned above, from now on the standard strips will be larger and have more content to them.  However, this means they'll also take more time to do.  So in order to compensate for that I've decided to make a few changes.

Mondays and Fridays will be the same type of full colour strip that you saw with Friends Overshare - Pt. VI, however Wednesday's (at least for the time being) will be more like the one you see posted below that one.  Let me explain.

Starting this week I'll be doing up shorter black and white, (primarily) single panel strips to help round out the weekly content.  These strips won't follow the general GT storyline, will have their own separate archives, and be posted below the regular strips.  Now at the moment these will only be showing up on Wednesdays.  However, if everything goes as well as I expect and they end up saving me as much time as I think they will, I'll begin posting them twice a week (most likely on Tuesdays and Thursdays), and possibly even three times a week.

This is something I've been thinking of doing for a long while now for several reasons, not the least of which being that I'd kinda like to start moving towards updating five times a week without losing the quality of the storyline strips, but I wasn't exactly sure how to go about doing it.  Well I do now, and I'd be remiss if I didn't point towards one webcomic in particular that has truly set an example for me and has helped me find my way.  Apple Geeks have been doing their AG Lite strips for over a year now, and in doing so I feel they have managed to accomplish exactly what I'm hoping to do here.  And while I don't plan on doing the same type of black and white newspaper style strips that they do, I was definitely using what they've done as a roadmap for what I'll be doing with Geek Tragedy Squared (that's what I'm calling them...'cause they're all set inside a square...yeah, I'm all clever and shit aren't I?).

So there you have it folks.  Larger strips on Mondays and Fridays, smaller ones on Wednesdays, and the possibility of more updates per week coming your way as early as the end of this month.  Hopefully this works for you guys, but either way, feel free to let me know what you think.

Alrighty, that's all for me for now.

04 / AUG / 07 - 1626 CST : Kevin Smith is a god...

Grace just sent me this, and I needed to share it with all of you.  It's a clip of Kevin Smith at SDCC responding to a...uh...less than kind question that was asked during his Q&A.

Thanks Grace!

1800 CST : Finding Waldo...

Hey folks.

Yes, it's true.  I really am looking for Waldo.  Or at least the kind fellow from the con who was dressed as Waldo and paid good money for a guest spot in the strip.  So if he or anyone who knows him is reading this, please drop me an e-mail.

Thanks!

Oh, and one more thing before I try to get some sleep.  You may have noticed that Noname's colour scheme has been altered a bit.  I've been meaning to tone down the hotness of the strip's colours for a while now, but just never got around to it till now.  Anyway, I'm not sure if it's any better, but I figured it was worth testing out.

Okay time to go.

02 / AUG / 07 - 0829 CST : Just to clarify...

Hey folks.

It seems there are more of you out there who don't get the movie reference than I would've thought, so I just wanted to let you know the strip is sort of a nod to Batman Begins.  Originally I was going to make the...uh..."ski instructor" look more like Liam Neeson, but in the end I did him up as kind of a movie / comic hybrid of his character, so maybe that's where I lost some of you.

Or maybe the strip just kinda sucked.  Who knows?

01 / AUG / 07 - 1632 CST : Hiatus Ends!

Hey folks.

Well the title pretty much says it all.  I'll have more to say about how things will be shaping up in the months ahead another time, but for now I just want to thank y'all again for sticking with me this past month.  Seriously, not only have my numbers not dropped, but they've actually grown (granted that may have something to do with the recent con, and the folks who have been kind enough to link to me lately, but still).

Anyway, I'll be picking up the previous story where I left off on Friday (or possibly Monday if I can't refrain from doing a Viewer Feedback strip on Friday that has been burning in my brain for the past week or so), and then come Wednesday I'll have an announcement about a change to the update schedule / style.

Okay, that's it for me.  Take care, and I'll talk to you soon.

Oh, one more thing.  Those of you who are waiting on e-mails from me, really sorry for the delay.  I'll be sure to drop y'all a line by Saturday at the latest.

Later,

-Ed
