26 / JUL / 08 - 2133 PST : Awesomeness is tiring...

Hey folks.

Back at the hotel and totally beat from a crazy day, but I'm not too tired to post few pics from the con.  More to come later.

24 / JUL / 08 - 1922 PST : Weathered the storm...

Hey folks.

Just a quick update from the con.

Now this is my first year at SDCC, so I really have no frame of reference, but from what people have told me, it is insanely busy this year.  Thursday (with the exception of Wednesday's preview night) is supposed to be the slowest day, and yet today was easily as busy as Saturday was last year.  Which I'm guessing means that Saturday will be like something out of 28 Weeks Later...but with a lot less of the killing and flesh eating n' stuff (I hope).

I spent most of the day trucking around with my buddy Jeff handing out my colour portfolio to any comic publisher who was accepting submission packages so I didn't get much of a chance to take many pics, but here's a couple of them to hold you over till I get a little more snap happy.

The first is a shot I took after lunch as Jeff and I were heading back into the convention center.  And even though it does show a fair number of people making their way to the pop culture promise land, it still doesn't do justice to just how crazy it was.

And the second pic I got for y'all is one I snapped of Evil Inc's, Brad Guigar (the guy sitting down signing a book) and Starslip Crisis's, Kris Straub (the guy not sitting down signing a book).

I can't tell you how great it was after doing the color work on his strip for almost six months now, to finally get the chance to meet Brad face to face.  And now that I have I can honestly say that not only is he one of the nicest people I've ever had the chance to work with, but he's also one of the nicest people I've ever met, period!

Unfortunately I didn't have much of a chance to talk to either Brad or Kris for very long, but with any luck I'll be able to chat with them again a bit more before the cons over.

Okay folks, that's it for now.  Hopefully I'll get my photog on (that didn't sound right, did it?) a lot more over the next few day.

0533 PST : The quiet before the storm...

Hey folks.

Well after taking a car, to get to a plane, to get to a bus, to get to a train, I finally arrived in San Diego.  I got my badge, got a bit of sleep, and now I'm ready to "get my geek on" for the next four days!

I'll try to keep y'all updated as the week goes on, but for now I need to log of and fleshing out my plan of attack.

09 / JUL / 08 - 1447 CST : Green with frustration...

Hey folks.

Yep, I've had to go ahead and post another work in progress page from my colorist portfolio in lieu of a new strip.  Believe me when I say that I'd much rather provide you with more wacky GT adventures instead, but unfortunately the portfolio is all I've had time to work on lately.

I should note that while I am happy with the progress of this page so far, it is easily one of the most frustrating and painful attempts at colour I've done to date.  Still, the whole reason I picked this one was because I knew it would be a challenge, so looking at it that way I think I made a good choice.

Alrighty guys, I'm off to bed now.  See y'all tomorrow.

08 / JUL / 08 - 0845 CST : And we're back...well, half- back...maybe three quarters...

Hey folks.

Well my four week break from the Geek Tragedy universe has come and gone, and I'm back to producing new strips for you folks to see.  Sorta...

Here's the thing guys.  I've still got a lot of stuff I need to get done and less time than I'd like to do it in.  And I'm not just talking about the short term goals of getting my portfolio ready for the San Diego Comic Con, or having all my prep work done for Connecticon (though those are my top priorities at the moment).  I'm talking about me looking ahead to the next year or two to see what's needed to get my art career to where I want it to be, and realizing that the one key element that I'll most likely be lacking is the free time I'd need to do what needs to be done.

At this moment there are two major time sinks in my life.  There's my job (which pays me enough real cash money to afford food and shelter), and Geek Tragedy (which also pays me enough money to afford food and shelter, providing of course my "shelter" was a mud hut in Ecuador, and my "food" consisted of insects, leaves and tree bark).

Now I'm pretty sure Ecuadorian mud huts don't have much in the way internet access (at least not broadband I don't think), which means that even if I were to quit my job and move away from modern civilization, I'd have no way to keep that fat webcomic cash rolling in anyways.  So during this last couple weeks I did a lot of serious thinking about how best to accomplish everything I need to do, keep you folks entertained with Noname and the GT crew's wacky antics, and yet still keep the job that provides me with a warm bed and a belly full of frozen pizza.

Broken promises...

At the beginning of the year I made the commitment to provide you guys with four updates a week come rain or shine for all of 2008, and I think I managed to do a fairly good job of staying the course (at least until the middle of June anyway).  However, since first making that declaration in January, a lot has changed.  I've taken on the colouring duties at Evil Inc six days a week, I've been getting more commission work, and last but not least I've really started working towards getting work as a professional colorist (for comics I mean, not hair).

In essence, I'm doing the best I can to get to a point in my life where even if I'm not yet able to generate all my income from working on my own projects, at the very least I'd like to be making my entire living working for others as an artist instead of a lab monkey.  And while in a perfect world that would be a goal that I could still accomplish while working full time and doing the site four days a week, unfortunately the reality of my situation is quite different.

So folks, for the next few months at least anyway, Geek Tragedy's update schedule will be more in the "twice to three times a week" range.  Probably something along the lines of GT˛ on Mondays and Fridays, with a colour update on Wednesdays.

Yeah, I know.  It's not exactly my ideal setup either, but it's just the way it's gotta be for now I'm afraid.

So there you have it folks.  Geek Tragedy may not be back in full force, but at least it's back none-the-less.

Alrighty, time for me to get some more work done.

03 / JUL / 08 - 1112 CST : And the colours keep on coming...

Hey folks,

I don't have anything new to post just yet, but I figured I'd give you peek at the next bit of lineart that I'll be colouring next.

The pencils for this piece were done by Ivan Reis, and the inks are by Jeff Dabu.

There are a few reasons I picked this page to add to my colouring portfolio.  First off, I'm a big Green Lantern fan.  Also, despite being quite busy, it's a very subdued page, and I figured I should show what I can do on a page that isn't driven by action.  And lastly, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a total bitch to colour, and I kinda wanted to challenge myself.

Alrighty!  Hopefully by tomorrow I'll be have breathed some colour into this page and will have a new bit of work to show y'all.  So I guess I better get to it then.
